Marjoram – Origanum marjorana

Sweet Marjoram essential oil, not to be confused with “Spanish Marjoram,” is part Origanum family. This camphoraceous essential oil is high in the constituent monoterpenes and monoterpenols and has no 1,8 cineole (oxide). Spanish Marjoram constituents are opposite, having a high content of 1,8 cineole and low levels of monoterpenes and monoterpenols. Sweet Marjoram enjoyed popularity as a common medicinal herb around the Mediterranean basin. A few drops can be diffused before bed, and a few drops can be added to a hot bath at the first signs of a cold. It is used in masculine, oriental, and herbal-spicy blends for perfumes and colognes. It is also a staple in insomnia blends.

Therapeutic Properties

Because Sweet Marjoram has high levels of monoterpenes and monoterpenals, it is most effective as a tonifier, sedative, and antiseptic. Where Spanish Marjoram, because of its high 1,8 cineole content, is more effective for respiratory congestion.
